A one-star review from someone who was never your customer. A competitor's suspicious burst of negative ratings. An ex-employee venting in public. Fake and revenge reviews are frustrating – and they can affect how many people choose your business. Here's what you can realistically do.

Fake Google reviews hurt, but you can act.
1. Stay calm and document everything
Take screenshots of the review, the reviewer's profile and the date. Check your records to confirm whether the person was actually a customer. This documentation helps if you need to escalate.
2. Check whether it breaks Google's rules
Google removes reviews that violate its policies – for example fake engagement, conflicts of interest (competitors or ex-employees), off-topic content, harassment or hate speech. A review that is simply negative but genuine will usually stay.
3. Report it the right way
You can flag a review directly from your Google Business Profile. Choose the reason that fits best and be specific. If the first report doesn't work, Google offers a review management tool where you can check the status and, in some cases, appeal.
4. Reply – briefly and professionally
While you wait, write a short, calm reply. Future customers will read it. For example: "We have no record of a customer with this name or a visit on this date. If you did visit us, please contact us directly so we can look into it." Avoid accusations; stick to facts.
5. Know when to get legal advice
In Germany, reviews containing false factual claims or insults may be challenged legally. If a review seriously harms your business, speaking to a lawyer who specialises in this area can be worthwhile. (This article is general information, not legal advice.)
6. Strengthen your overall rating
The best defence is a steady stream of genuine reviews. One fake review among dozens of real ones has much less impact. See our guides on collecting more reviews and answering negative reviews.
Make sure your Google Business Profile is fully verified before you report anything. Google's policy on prohibited and restricted content lists exactly which reviews it will remove.
