Visitors are impatient. If your page takes too long to load – especially on a phone – many will leave before they even see what you offer. Speed also plays a role in how Google ranks pages. The good news: many speed problems on small business websites have simple fixes.

Website speed matters because people leave slow sites.
How to check your speed
Use Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool and test your homepage and one or two important service pages. Focus on the mobile results. Don't panic about a perfect score; look for the biggest issues it lists.
7 quick wins
- Compress your images. Photos straight from a camera or phone are often several megabytes. Resize them to the size they're displayed at and use modern formats like WebP.
- Lazy-load images further down the page so they only load when needed.
- Remove sliders and autoplay videos from the top of the page. They're heavy and rarely help conversions.
- Cut unused plugins. Every plugin can add scripts and styles. If you don't use it, remove it.
- Use caching. A caching setup serves ready-made pages instead of building each one from scratch.
- Limit external scripts such as chat widgets, embedded maps and tracking tools. Each one adds loading time – and often privacy obligations too.
- Choose good hosting. Cheap shared hosting can be slow at busy times. Hosting with servers in Germany or the EU is also a plus for local visitors.
Speed is part of the whole experience
A fast site feels professional. Combined with a mobile-first design and clear calls to action, it keeps visitors on your page long enough to contact you.
Speed is one of several basics in our small business website checklist – and fewer external scripts also mean a simpler privacy policy. You can test your own pages for free with Google PageSpeed Insights.
